5 Reasons to light a candle when you are feeling overwhelmed

Overwhelm. What does it mean? It most commonly means to cause to be overcome with emotion as a result of an amount of something (work, stress, etc.) that’s just too much to handle (dictionary.com). The cognitive impact of feeling perpetually overwhelmed can range from mental slowness, forgetfulness, confusion, difficulty concentrating or thinking logically, to a racing mind or an impaired ability to problem solve (Harvard Business Review). There are a number of actions we can take to reduce overwhelm, one being mindfulness and we know that candles can help with that process. Here’s why. 

  • Candles create a calming, stress-free environment and a soothing, scentful experience, allowing the senses to relax for complete presence of mind in a spiritual environment. The aromas can help you to feel grounded or happy (or both) and help you to relax. And by activating our limbic system (the part of our brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses), the scents trigger happy memories.
  • Candle gazing – when you focus on the flame of the candle, it can help you drift into a meditative state, focussing your mind on one thing, quietening the millions of thoughts that run through our minds on a daily basis. Light a candle and focus in on the flame, the small fire that has a trance-inducing effect and which is the grounding force for your attention.
  • If you prefer not to focus on just one candle, you can use a few candles around a room to create a relaxing environment and soothing ambience. Place your candles safely around your space and enjoy the sensory experience as soon as you light the wick, allowing the fragrance to catapult you into a state of immediate presence, whilst the fragrance envelopes you and creates feelings of warmth, peace, safety and happiness from within.
  • Candles can help ease tension and promote healing with aromatherapy fragrances. Aromatherapy oils have therapeutic healing properties, helping to treat physical ailments as well as our mood and emotions. Aromatherapy has been used since Egyptian times, providing many healing powers, including beautiful smells which relax our central nervous system. The use of essential oils has been shown to significantly reduce anxiety and stress levels. I love it when people walk into our shop and their first reaction is that of calm and relaxation.
  • Scented candles can help to support good sleep patterns. The calming aromas help to relax the nerves and calm the mind, a great reason to light a candle before bedtime to release the stresses of the day and induce sleepiness.
